John W. Bays
1920 - 2010

John W. Bays 90, of Oldtown went to be with the lord on Monday July 26, 2010 at his home on the Bays Farm in Oldtown KY.

He was born on January 21, 1920 in Oldtown a son of the late John "Jack" & Nora Miller Bays.

He was an Elder and a 68 year member of the Oldtown Christian Church where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent, he was a retired carman for the C.S.X. Transportation, he also was employed by the Greenup County Schools as a bus driver, King Powder Plant and Kinner Lumber.

He was an avid gardener and tobacco farmer who loved his family and enjoyed a hobby of whittling and carving.

He was preceded in death along with his parents by two sisters Violet Pansy Suezle and Macel Marie Sisco; two brothers Virgil Elmer Bays and George Edward Bays; a half sister Eunice Bowling; and two half brothers Leonard F. Bays and Jesse M. Bays.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Bethel May Brown Bays whom he married on November 13, 1939; four daughters Nora Grubb and her husband Don of Oldtown, Barbara VanGorden and her husband Steve of Oldtown, Carolyn Worley and her husband Ray of Clarksville TN and Flo Meadows and her husband Jim of Greenup; two sons John Paul Bays and his wife Nancy of Lloyd and Carlos "Mike" Bays and his wife Gina of Ashland; 14 Grandchildren; 29 Great Grandchildren and 7Great Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday July 29, 2010 at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Ronnie Sisk.

Interment will follow at the William S. Bays Cemetery on the Bays Family Farm on the NorthFork Road in Oldtown.

Visitation will be at 6:00 PM Wednesday and 1 hour before the service Thursday at the Funeral Home.

Elwood Brown  
1925 - 2010

Elwood Brown Sr., 85, of Wheelersburg, Ohio, formerly of Greenup County, Ky., died Monday, July 19, 2010, in SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Mr. Brown was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Magoffin County, Ky., a son of the late William H. and Laura Hall Brown.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Ruth Johnson Brown; his second wife, Lucille Fisher May Hann Brown; one daughter, Patty Selogic; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

He was a retired truck driver with Liquid Transport in Ashland, Ky., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attended Calvary Baptist Church in Greenup, Ky., and was a member of Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving are five sons, Dale (Judy) Brown of Columbus, Ohio, Vale Eugene (Teresa) Brown of Byrdstown, Tenn., Elwood "Woody" (Sandy) Brown Jr. of Worthington, Ky., Larry Ray Brown of Greenup and Kevin Wayne (Elaine) Brown of Flatwoods, Ky.; two daughters, Estella Sue (John Dell) Johnson of Wheelersburg and Anita (Marvin) Chaffins of Ashland, Ky.; a brother, Alfred Brown of Indianapolis, Ind.; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Junior Moore.

Burial will be in Quillen Cemetery in Load, Ky., with military graveside services by American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from after noon Thursday at the funeral home.

Mabel White

1921 – 2010

Mabel Ruth Justice Thacker White 89, passed away Saturday June 26, 2010 at Kingsbrook Life Care Center in Ashland KY.

She was born on April 5, 1921 in Pike County KY a daughter of the late James A. & Eveline Anderson Justice.

She was a housewife, loving mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.

She enjoyed fishing, crocheting and cooking for her family.

She was preceded in death by three husbands, Okrey Justice Johhny Ray Thacker and Darrell White; one son, Phillip Justice; two grandsons, Gregory Justice and Russ Cremeans; nine sisters, Tilda, Pie, Melster, Opal, Pebble, Emmaline, Marie, Edna and Juanita.

Ruth is survived by three sons, Dean (Phyllis) Justice of Corinith MS, Ronnie (Shirley) Justice of Thomasville AL and Roger (Julie) Justice of Tampa FL; two daughters, Sue Wilson and LeNita (Gary) Cemeans both of Greenup; 13 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren; a sister, Margaret  Muscik of Shelbiana KY and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday June 29, 2010 at Lucas and son Funeral Home in Pikeville KY.

Burial will follow in the Annie E. Young Cemetery in Shelbiana.

Visitation will be after 6:00 PM Monday June 28, 2010 at the funeral Home.

Cloah Mae Hall Belt
1935 - 2010

Cloah Mae Hall Belt, 75, of Greenup, Ky., went to be with the lord on Monday, April 26, 2010, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

She was born Feb. 27, 1935, in Floyd County, Ky., to the late Layne and Anna Osborne Hall.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, James Tom Belt, in 1978; and a brother, Teddy Hall.

She was a Christian and devoted wife and mother. She was of the Baptist faith, a member of Plum Grove Baptist Church, a former Sunday school and VBS teacher, a founder member of the Little Sandy Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a Kentucky colonel. She was a retiree from the Greenup County School District and the former Applegate's Market.

Surviving are two daughters, Connie S. Belt and Karen E. Belt, both of Greenup, Ky.; a son, James Jim Belt and his wife, Gretta, of Argillite, Ky.; two grandsons, Bradley J. and Brandon D. Belt, both of Argillite; three sisters, Yvonne Belt and Geraldine (Paul) Holbrook, both of Greenup, and Marsha Conley of Argillite; a sister-in-law, Kathryn (Glen) Eskew of Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Greenup by Dr. Tom Melvin and Brother Shawn Rose.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Greenup.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Plum Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 812 Plum Grove Road, Greenup, KY 41144.

Patty Jean Stephens Kinkade
1943 - 2010

Patty Jean Stephens Kinkade, 66, of Greenup, Ky., died Tuesday, April 6, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

She was born July 4, 1943, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Tom and Anna Marshall Stephens.

In addition, she was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde Stephens and James Stephens; a sister, Mickey Stephens Myer; and nieces, Gail Meadows and Patsy Hensley.

She was a retired nursing assistant for Hemstead Manor in Portsmouth, Ohio, and attended Greenup First Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Lynn Kinkade of Greenup; son, Robert David "Bobby" Kinkade and his wife Gisele of Waterford, Mich.; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Rose Kinkade of Greenup; grandson, Jacob Robert Kinkade of Greenup; brothers, Lester Stephens and his wife Elsie of Load, Ky., Arthur Stephens and his wife Millie of Lagrange, Ky., and Johnny Stephens and his wife Linda of Columbia, Tenn.; and sisters, Dorothy Adkins and Ruth Boggs and her husband Ralph, all of Load.

Patty was a wonderful Grandmother and she knew no strangers. She touched everyone with her loving, caring, humorous personality. She is resting peacefully and can walk once again in Heaven with the Lord.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup by Dr. Tom Melvin.

Burial will be in Quillen Cemetery in Lynn, Ky.

Margaret Lee Baker
1920 - 2010

Margaret Lee Baker 89, of Flatwoods KY went to be with the lord Friday March 5, 2010 at her home in Flatwoods.

She was born on July 3, 1920 in Carter County KY a daughter of the late Arthur & Icie Ann Arden Beach.

She was preceded in death along with her parents by her husband Preston Baker who died on June 1, 1982; a daughter, Delorise Baker; a brother, Billy Beach; and a sister, Lucille Beach.

Margaret is survived by a son, Dennis Baker and his wife Norma of Flatwoods; a daughter, Icie Melvin of Flatwoods; a brother, Manford Beach of Oneida TN; two sisters, Magdalene Whitt and Carma Stapleton both of Ashland; five grandchildren, Jerry Melvin, Connie Melvin, Eddie Melvin, Mark Baker and Scott Baker; four great grandchildren, Travis Baker, Dustin Baker, Jerrett Melvin and Whitney Melvin; and her care giver Betty Flower. 

Graveside funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Monday March 8, 2010 at the Baker - Smith Cemetery in Greenup County by Brother Tom Melvin.

Visitation will be held at 6:00 PM Sunday March 7, 2010 at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup.

Willie Arnel Skaggs
1919 - 2010

Willie Arnel Skaggs, 90, of Greenup, Ky., died Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Greenup, a son of the late Dallas and Bertha Lee Harper Skaggs.

In addition, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Skaggs.

He was a retired clerk for C&O Railroad and was a member of the Greenup Church of God, Greenup County Wildlife Club, Greenup Saddle Club and Greenup County Farm Bureau.

Surviving are a son, Calvin Ray Stover and his wife, Tina, of Greenup; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Sheila Stover of Worthington, Ky.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup.

Burial will be in Prichard Cemetery in Greenup.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today, Feb. 18, 2010, at the funeral home.

1943 - 2010

Dorothy Nadean Wilson, 66, of Greenup, Ky., died Feb. 13, 2010, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

She was born May 23, 1943, in South Shore, Ky., a daughter of Minnie Ethel Wright Diller of South Shore and the late Raymond Lester Diller.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Jo Wilson, in 1994.

She was a member of South Shore First Church of God.

Surviving are her husband, Larry Joe Wilson of Greenup; a son, Jeffery Scott Wilson and his wife, Amanda, of Greenup; three brothers, Jerry Diller, Michael Diller and Roland Diller, all of South Shore; a sister, Jewell Dennis of Zanesville, Ohio; and a grandson, Jeffery Grant Wilson of Greenup.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Randy Dennis and Brother Willard Nolan.

Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.

Lydia Pruitt Miller
1911 - 2010

Lydia Pruitt Miller, 99, of Greenup, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.

She was born Jan. 29, 1911, in Clay Lick, Ky. to the late Charles and Liza Jane McClaskey Pruitt.

Her husband, John Morgan Miller, preceded her in death Jan. 16, 1996.

She was a founding member of Raccoon Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, John Michael Miller and wife Carma Deane of Greenup; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Thurman Edward Miller and Harold Eugene Miller; a daughter, Juanita Darlene Chandley; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup by Borthers Danny Brown and Bill Oaks.

Burial will be in McGuire Cemetery in Greenup.

Friends may call 6 p.m. today, Jan. 31, 2010, at the funeral home.

Carolyn Troxler
1958 - 2010

Carolyn Jane Beach Troxler, 51, of Greenup, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky., surrounded by her family.

She was born Aug. 29, 1958, in Russell, Ky., a daughter of William Russell and Mary Jane Dale Beach of Greenup.

She was a 1976 graduate of Greenup County High School, a member of the House of Praise in Greenup and was a teacher's aide at Wurtland Elementary School.

She is survived, along with her parents, by her husband, James Edward Troxler; a son, Jamathan Jabrae Troxler and his wife, Savannah, of Greenup; a daughter, Jamae Frances Troxler of Greenup; two brothers, Andre Pierre Beach and his wife, Kathy, of South Shore and David Russell Beach of Greenup; and a sister, Linda Jeanine Fitzpatrick of Greenup.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at the House of Praise in Greenup by Brother Bernard Twinam.

Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Greenup.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup and an hour before services Saturday at the church.

Kermit Preston
1925 - 2010


Kermit Preston, 84, of Worthington, Ky., died Jan. 13, 2010, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.

He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Johnson County, Ky., a son of the late Garland and Elizabeth Johnson Preston.

He was a retired conductor for the C&O Railroad, a member of Kenwood Baptist Church, a World War II Army veteran and had a doctorate in theology.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian Ruth Dove Preston of Worthington; a daughter, Kerma Lynn (Kenny) Clark of Worthington; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Stepp of Bellefonte, Ky.; grandsons Kasey Clark, Jason Clark and Cory Clark; granddaughters Katie Clark and Kristen Wyscarver; great-grandsons, Brady Clark and Hayden Frazier; and great-granddaughters Grace Caroline Clark and Bristol Clark.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup, Ky., by Brother Dallas Sutton.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Otis James “O.J.” Johnson
1937 - 2010


Otis James "O.J." Johnson, 72, of Greenup, Ky., died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 23, 1937, in Ironton, Ohio, a son of the late William Ike and Daisy Pearl Dunn Johnson.

He was a retired laborer at the AK Steel Coke Plant with 28 years of service. He was a former member of the Greenup Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Greenup McDonald's Breakfast Club. O.J. coached and umpired several Little League baseball and softball teams in Greenup and loved to watch all the local children play sports.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Williams Johnson of Greenup; sons Larry Johnson of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Johnny E. Williams, Dwaine "Boo" Williams and Gregory Todd Williams, all of Greenup; daughters Jacquetta Johnson of Portsmouth and Amy Louise Williams of Greenup; brothers Johnny Johnson of South Point, Ohio, and Marvin Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters Willa Royal and Arvella Dickerson, both of Ironton; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Wright's Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Richard Carter.

Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Greenup.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today, Jan. 7, 2010, at the funeral home.
