Dorothea E. Eckert

Dorothea E. Eckert, 95, of Defiance, passed away at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at the Laurels of Defiance.

She was born Aug. 13, 1915, in her childhood home and family farm in Defiance County, the daughter of Walter and Henrietta (Moss) Derge. In 1942, she married Robert Eckert, who preceded her in death. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the South Richland Township Fire Department Auxiliary, a Defiance County Senior Center board member and a Defiance County Red Cross board member. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and flowers along with bird watching.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and her parents.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Karen) Rohn, Defiance; two sons, William (Helen) Eckert, Valrico, Fla., and John (Dawn) Eckert, Defiance; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance with Rev. Stephen "Wally" Seibel and Rev. Max Begley officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance. Visitation is from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today, Aug. 30, 2010, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Defiance or Hospice the Caring Way of Defiance.

Margaret E. Brown Henkle

The last of the third generation of Brown's Bakery that Reinhard and Emilie Brown started in Defiance in 1873.

Margaret E. Brown Henkle, 95, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at the Laurels of Defiance.

She was the daughter of Grace E. Spangler and Frederick G. Brown Sr. She was a graduate of Defiance High School in 1933 and a graduate of Fort Wayne Business College. She was former owner and bookkeeper for Brown's Bakery and a realtor after her retirement. Margaret and Claude W. Henkle, superintendent of Defiance City Schools, were married in 1951.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Elizabeth A. Enos; and brothers, Frederick J., Edward S. and Robert H. Brown.

Margaret is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Margaret (Peg) was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Elks and Zonta Club.

A showing will be held at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, on Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 6-8 p.m. The service will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Michael Donnally officiating.

Memorials may be left to St. Paul United Methodist, Defiance City Schools Foundation and Alzheimers Association.

James Allen Reeb

James Allen Reeb, 63, formerly of Defiance, departed this life on August 25, 2010. God called Jim to his heavenly home from the Northwest Ohio Development Center of Toledo, Ohio.

He was born January 10, 1947, in Defiance, Ohio, the son of Robert and Frances (Babbitt) Reeb. Jim is survived by his father and stepmother, Robert and Ann Reeb, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; a sister, Janice Hull, Greenwood, Ind.; a brother, Jeffery (Kate) Reeb, LaCanada, Calif.; and nephews, Cole and Dane Reeb.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Frances (Babbitt) Reeb.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 28, 2010, in the Northwest Ohio Development Center, 1101 South Detroit Ave., Toledo, Ohio, at noon. A burial service will follow in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance, Ohio, at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts be donated to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 East River Road, Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.

Doris Nagel

Doris Nagel, 74, Defiance, Ohio, died Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

She was born October 15, 1935, in Henry County, the daughter of Fred and Pauline (Wesche) Kruse. On February 19, 1955, she married Ralph Nagel, Defiance, who survives. She was a cook at Tinora Schools, retiring after 25 years. She was also a member and choir director of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, rural Defiance, and president of WELCA.

Also surviving are three sons, Chester (Kathi) Nagel of Defiance, James Nagel of Defiance and Rich (Mary Alice) Nagel of Defiance; three daughters, Barb Bishop of Fort Wayne, Janet (Steve) Zipfel of Defiance and Sue (Kraig) Beilharz of Defiance; a brother, Charles Kruse, Defiance; a sister, Martha Flory, Defiance; and 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Marie Plassman.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2010, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard Buchsteiner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Preferred memorials are to the St. Mark's Lutheran Church building fund, American Cancer Society and/or the CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

Wanda E. Keller

Wanda E. Keller, 81, Defiance, Ohio, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Brookview Healthcare Center, Defiance.

She was born April 28, 1929, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Detter) Johnston. On April 18, 1948, she married Victor W. Keller, who survives. She was a 1947 Chesterfield graduate and a homemaker.

Also surviving are three sons, Stephen Keller of Avondale, Ariz., Gregory (Maria) Keller of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Kevin Keller, Defiance; and five grandsons.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Wallace Johnston.

A private family services will be Friday, August, 27, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home with Rev. Donald L. Luhring officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, rural Defiance. There is no visitation.

Gwendolyn "Gwen" K. Shinabery

Gwendolyn "Gwen" K. Shinabery, 67, Defiance, Ohio, died Sunday, August 22, 2010, at Laurels of Defiance.

She was born October 7, 1942, in Defiance, the daughter of Url and Marjorie (Greenler) Goller. In 1964, she married Jon Gary Shinabery, who survives. She was a member of Zion's Lutheran Church and Elks Lodge Auxiliary and a 1960 graduate of Holgate High School. She was also a graduate of Parkview Methodist School of Nursing, Fort Wayne, Ind., and a registered nurse at GM Powertrain for 36 years and supervisor of the medical department for the last 10 years.

She was a loving wife, mother and Nana. She loved to paint and line dance. Gwen was a very caring mother and nurse her whole life, a very caring person. She will be missed very much by her family and friends.

Surviving are her loving husband of 46 years, Jon Gary Shinabery; two daughters, Ann (David) Herrick of Columbus, Ohio, and Amy (Craig) Snyder, Lakewood, Ohio; two granddaughters, Logan and Elliott Snyder; two grandsons, Reece and Connor Herrick; and two sisters, Pam (Gaylen) Decker of Orchard Lake, Mich., and Candace (Mike) Sturni, Xenia, Ohio.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, August, 26, 2010, in Zion's Lutheran Church, Defiance, with Rev. Timothy Reynolds officiating. Entombment will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, rural Defiance. Visitation is from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Lois M. Lehman

Lois M. Lehman, 81, of Defiance died August 20, 2010 at Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center. She was born February 10, 1929 in Defiance, Ohio the daughter of Earl and Diane (Fruth) Gessner. On September 30, 1950 she married Darcy M. Lehman, who survives.

Lois is survived by 2 sons, Michael A. (Carla) Lehman of Davie, FL, and Thomas E. (Paula) Lehman of Westerville, OH; 3 Grandchildren, Abbey Lehman, Cason Lehman and Brianne Lehman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, Marge Lero and Joanne Gump.

Mrs. Lehman was a member of Independence United Methodist Church, Life Member Ladies Aux. Purple Heart, a Jr Achievement Defiance Co. Volunteer, and was a shoe clerk and manager at Nobel’s Shoe Store and Wendt’s Shoe Store.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, August 23, 2010 at Independence United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Laura Clark. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, and one hour prior to services at the Church. Burial will be in Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery, Defiance. Memorials may be given to Independence United Methodist Church or the American Diabetes Association.

Carol R. Thomas

Carol R. Thomas, 68, Defiance, died Friday, August 20, 2010, at The Toledo Hospital, Toledo, Ohio.

She was born December 26, 1941, in Jewell, the daughter of Perry M. and Marjorie K. (Minsel) Lehman. On May 2, 1964, she married John T. Thomas, who died on May 17, 1988. She was a homemaker and president of the Defiance Area Post Polio Support Group.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth (Donald) DuBois, Jr. of Holland, Ohio; two brothers, Darcy Lehman of Defiance and James "Jim" (Betty) Lehman of Defiance; a sister, Margaret C. (Wilbur) Gick of Defiance; and her pet dog, Candi.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Thomas; and her parents.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hanenkrath-Clevenger Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Rev. Timothy Reynolds officiating. Burial will be at Independence Cemetery, Defiance County, Ohio. Visitation is Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

Preferred memorials are to a charity of the donor's choice or Defiance Hospice.

Burdette L. Brink

Burdette L. Brink, 75, Holgate, Ohio, died at 1:48 p.m. on Friday, August 20, 2010, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center, Defiance.

Burdette was the oldest son born March 11, 1935, to Charles (Chad) and Marvel Zachrich Brink in Henry County. He married Lois R. Thieroff on June 16, 1956, who survives.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Lois, of 54 years. Burdette leaves behind three daughters, Jean (Dave) Grossheim, Julia and Jill (Jaime) Hinojosa, all of Defiance; two sons, Jim (Betty) of Defiance and John (Angel) of Continental; 11 grandchildren, Laurie (Mark) Flory, Andrea (Andy) Buchholz, Jason Grossheim, Paul (Michelle) Brink, Annette Brink, Mark Brink, Andy Brink, Matthew Fernandez, Samantha Fernandez, Isaac Hinojosa and Daniel Hinojosa; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Dennis Brink of Continental and Fred (Carol) Brink of Toledo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ann Brink.

He was a 1953 graduate of Holgate High School, Holgate, Ohio. Burdette served in the U.S. Army from 1953-56. He began his career as a rural letter carrier in 1958 and having served both Holgate and Defiance routes retired after achieving the Million Mile Award in 1990. He was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and has served numerous positions including Sunday School Superintendent and Cemetery Trustee. Burdette was a member of the South Richland Fire Department, VFW, AMVETS, American Legion, Maumee Valley Car Club, South Richland Zoning Board, the Eagles and was past president of the Ohio Rural Letter Carriers Association. His love of deer hunting, bluegrass music, restoring old cars and acquiring antiques and collectibles were part of his greatest joys.

Visitation will be Monday, August 23, from 2-8 p.m. at Hanenkrath-Clevenger Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. Military services by VFW Post 3360 will be held Tuesday, August 24, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, New Bavaria Road, Defiance, OH, with Pastor W. Stottlemeyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Preferred memorials are to St. Stephen's Lutheran Church or CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

Ronald James Fischer, 59, Defiance, Ohio, died Thursday, August 19, 2010.

He was born June 23, 1951, in Napoleon, Ohio, the son of Eldor Henry and Lillian Alma (Rettig) Fisher. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War and a laborer.

Surviving are two sisters, Karen Hulbert of Napoleon and Rita Wagner, Okolona, Ohio; and a nephew, Justin (Vanessa) Wagner, Maumee, Ohio.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2010, in Riverside Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 3360. There is no visitation. Handling arrangements is Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance.

Preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association and/or the VA.

Ilene Fay Spacht, 78, Defiance, Ohio, died Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Twin Rivers Care & Rehabilitation Center, Defiance.

She was born August 9, 1932, in Monroe, Mich., the daughter of Carroll S. and Margaret E. (Redding) Snodgrass. On April 20, 1956, she married John Wesley Spacht, who survives. She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Defiance. She made various items at AuGlaize Village, was a 4-H advisor and member of the Defiance County Senior Center. She was a volunteer at the Defiance Children's Home and Defiance Hospital Auxiliary. She liked playing bingo.

Surviving are her husband, John Wesley Spacht; two sons, Mark B. and Thomas R. Spacht, Defiance; two daughters, Paula Page of Defiance and Catherine (Mike) Davis, Defiance; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Dora Naomi Carr of Defiance and Ruby E. Egler, Jewell Ohio.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a twin sister, Irene M. Vollmer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 20120, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Rev. Tim Yazel officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance County. Visitation is from 12-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Charles "Chuck" James Scott Jr., 49, Defiance, Ohio, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center, Defiance.

He was born March 8, 1961, in Defiance, the son of Charles James Sr. and Dinah S. (Schlegel) Scott. On June 15, 1983, he married Mary A. Brown, who survives in Junction, Ohio. He was a supervisor and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, frog gigging, animals, hunting and cars. He was also a family man who enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Mary A. Scott, Junction; a son, Robert Scott, Junction; two daughters, Andrea (Fred III) Parmer and newborn grandson, Fred Parmer IV, Bryan, Ohio, and Jessica Scott, Junction; his extended family, Raenita Spaeth and two grandsons, Andrew and Jacob Spaeth, all of Van Wert, Ohio; a brother, Matthew Scott, Paulding, Ohio; five sisters, Tamera (Kevin) Anderson of Paulding, Ohio, Beverly (Brian) Saylor of Continental, Ohio, Cynthia (Tim) Stokes of Melrose, Ohio, Catherine (Larry) Mullins of Paulding and Gena (Michael) George, Clyde, Ohio; and his mother Dinah A. Schlegel.

Preceding him in death were his father, Charles James Scott Sr.; a brother, Jonathon Scott; paternal grandparents, John and Pauline Scott; and maternal grandparents, Virgil and Dora Schlegel.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Rev. Isaac Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Junction Cemetery. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Allen "Sonny" E. Johnson

Allen "Sonny" E. Johnson, 92, Defiance, Ohio, and formerly of Bryan, Ohio, died Friday, August 13, 2010, at Mercy Hospital of Defiance.

He was born August 11, 1918, in Seattle, Wash., the son of John Alden and Norma Johnson. He married Frances Rigg, who preceded him in death. He was an automotive transmission specialist at Al's Transmission Service, Bryan. He was a member of the Amateur Pilot Association at the airport on a farm, Bryan Aero Park. He built some ultralight planes and loved flying. He was a member of the Eagles Aerie in Bryan and a U.S. Army veteran and Army Tech 4, serving during World War II. He attended Methodist churches in Pulaski and Bryan.

Surviving are two daughters, Dana Bree of Milford, Pa., and Erma (James) Moser, Defiance; two grandchildren, Joe Phillips of Las Vegas, Nev., and Fred Phillips, Atlantic City, N.J.; a great-grandson; two sisters, Norma Lucile Beal of Nevada City, Calif., and Bernice Janney, Spokane, Wash.; and his ex-wife, Julia L. (Moe) Johnson, Bryan.

Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife, Frances (Rigg) Johnson; and two brothers, Quint and Larry "Bub" Johnson.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2010, at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, with Rev. George Reed officiating. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 3360. Visitation is from 9-11 a.m. Monday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance.

Lydia N. Gutierrez, 27, Gallatin, and formerly of Defiance, died Thursday, August 12, 2010, in Gallatin.

She was born March 17, 1983, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Michael W. Parker and Virginia Gutierrez. She was a bartender at Buffalo Wild Wings, Hendersonville, Tenn., and a member of House of Grace Church, Gallatin.

Surviving are three sons, Carl Gutierrez of Defiance, Ohio, Paul Ramirez of Defiance and Roberto Ramirez, Defiance; five sisters, Rebekah (Dale) Sheets of New Bavaria, Ohio, Monica Gutierrez of Columbus, Ohio, Tessa Gutierrez of Defiance, Sarah Gutierrez, at home, and DeAnna Parker, at home; and her mother, Virginia Gutierrez, Defiance.

Preceding her in death were her father and maternal grandparents, Victor and Mary Gutierrez.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Defiance Christian Church, Defiance, with Rev. William Mesaeh Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance.

Jimmie Ray Vaughn II, 39, Defiance, Ohio, died Sunday, August 8, 2010, in Defiance.

He was born December 25, 1970, in Defiance, the son of Jimmie Ray and Martha (Maddock) Vaughn. On June 29, 2008, he married Jessica Perez, who survives. He was a supervisor with NOCAC for 10 years, a 1989 graduate of Fairview High School and a member of St. John's Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jessica Perez Vaughn II; mother, Martha Vaughn, Defiance; a son, Jacob Vaughn, at home; a daughter, Jennifer Vaughn, at home; a stepson, Ashton DePew, at home; a stepdaughter, Aysia DePew, at home; a stepgrandson, Jasper Hoye, Defiance; and two sisters, Karen (Ron) Tobias of Defiance and Laura (Tom) Kestner, Grelton, Ohio.

Preceding him in death were his father; a brother, Raymond L. Vaughn; a sister, Carolyn K. Vaughn-Saunders; and a stepbrother, Ronald Schindler.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010, at St. John's Catholic Church, Defiance, with Father Todd Dominique officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with a vigil service at 7 p.m.
